Foomatic is available on linuxprinting.org and consists of a
spooler-independent printer database and a universal print filter
(foomatic-rip) to be used with many different spoolers (printing
systems), including PPR.
The database contains information on more than 1200 printers, especially
how well they work with Linux, Unix, and similar operating systems,
which drivers you can use and how the drivers are executed. If the
printer is supported by at least one driver which is free software, the
databse generates a PPD file which you can download. This PPD file
together with foomatic-rip allows you to set up print queues with every
supported printing system. Simply follow the documentation links in the
printer entries or in the main menu of linuxprinting.org for
instructions. this way you can use every driver with every spooler, you
do not need special drivers for your spooler or support for your printer
by your spooler.
For PPR follow the instructions on
http://www.linuxprinting.org/ppr-doc.html
and you can use all drivers listed on linuxprinting.org, for example
HPIJS for HP and compatible printers, or Gimp-Print for Epson inkjets,
.. For native PostScript printers you do not need Foomatic with PPR,
but the PPD file supplied for your printer by the manufacturer. Such
PPDs you can also get from
http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/PPD/
Once a print queue set up with a PPD file, makes all adjustable options
of the driver (in case of a Foomatic PPD) or of the PostScript printer
(in case of a manufacturer-supplied PostScript PPD available).
