There is nothing difficult for HP about getting hold of proper Adobe
PostScript for the printers. After all they use it in 'serious' printers
like the LJ8550 (colour laserjet). They simply choose not to put it in the
B/W models. I assume it is to cost related.

I assume the difference between 8100 and 8150 you have noticed is because
the latter has a new RIP (supporting PS Level 3), so new bugs seems
probable.

Even more significantly: they sold it to you as supporting PostScript. 
Depending on where you are based, that could have meaningful
repercussions.
