I would think that AppleTalk could keep up with most printers. I think AppSock may be the same thing as the Universal Printing Protocol and the JetDirect protocol. It is basically the serial communications protocol over TCP/IP. PPR's "tcpip" interface program speaks this protocol. Because no temporary file is need, it will be much faster than lpr when printing large files.
