I think I tested it a few months ago.  It seemed to work.

It should.  It is read by a Unix program, namely Samba.  Its presence in
the shared folder is totally unecessary.

Make sure the "printer driver file =" line is in the [global] section.  I
think that, around the time of 1.40a5, the comments in the
smb-protos.conf.sample file were wrong out which line had to be copied into
the [global] section.
